An administrator frequently manages a specific group of virtual machines and monitors key performance metrics across multiple subscriptions. The administrator wants to customize the Azure portal interface to display these real-time charts, resource status tiles, and quick-launch shortcuts on a single screen immediately upon signing in.
Which Azure portal feature should the administrator configure?
Explanations
Azure Dashboards
Azure Dashboards
What Azure Dashboards Are
Azure Dashboards provide a flexible, customizable workspace within the Azure portal that allows administrators and developers to build dedicated views of their cloud resources, application metrics, and organizational data.
How It Meets the Requirement
- Customizable Layout: Administrators can pin various tiles, such as Azure Monitor charts, resource shortcuts, markdown notes, and query results directly to a dashboard grid.
- Centralized View: Dashboards aggregate visual metrics and status indicators across different resource groups and subscriptions in a unified window.
- Default Landing Page: The Azure portal settings allow users to set a specific customized dashboard as their default startup view upon signing in.
Key Advantages and Capabilities
- Tile Customization: Resize, rearrange, add, or remove tiles dynamically to fit specific operational workflows.
- Sharing and Access Control: Publish dashboards as Azure resources and apply Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) to collaborate with team members.
- Multi-Dashboard Support: Create multiple private or shared dashboards tailored for different projects, environments, or monitoring roles.
- Full-Screen Mode: Display critical health and telemetry metrics on large screens or operations center displays.
Why This Is Optimal
Azure Dashboards directly address the need for a personalized, visual workspace in the graphical portal without requiring custom scripts or third-party monitoring tools.
Azure Resource Graph
Azure Resource Graph
What Azure Resource Graph Is
Azure Resource Graph is an Azure governance and management service designed to provide efficient, high-performance querying and exploration of resources across multiple subscriptions at scale.
Why It Doesn't Meet the Requirement
- Query Engine Focus: Resource Graph is an underlying query and data exploration service powered by Kusto Query Language (KQL), rather than the graphical interface container used to present the portal home view.
- Not an Interface Dashboard: While query results from Resource Graph can optionally be pinned to a dashboard, the service itself is not the portal layout or customizable landing screen.
Key Characteristics and Limitations
- Complex Querying: Capable of querying millions of resources across hundreds of subscriptions in seconds.
- Rich Property Filtering: Allows filtering by deep JSON properties, tags, and lifecycle states.
- API and Portal Access: Can be accessed via the Azure Resource Graph Explorer, REST APIs, or CLI tools.
This Answer Would Be Correct If
The organization needed to run complex ad-hoc inventory queries to find all virtual machines running a specific operating system version across all enterprise subscriptions.
Azure Policy
Azure Policy
What Azure Policy Is
Azure Policy is a governance service that allows organizations to define, assign, and manage policies to enforce standards and assess compliance across Azure resources.
Why It Doesn't Meet the Requirement
- Governance vs. UI Customization: Azure Policy is used for auditing and enforcing rules on resource configurations (such as allowed regions or resource SKU sizes), not for modifying portal layout or interface widgets.
- No Visualization Capabilities: It does not create custom desktop views, metric tiles, or resource shortcut grids.
Key Characteristics and Limitations
- Compliance Assessment: Continuously scans resources to identify non-compliant configurations.
- Policy Enforcement: Prevents creation of non-compliant resources using
DenyorModifyeffects. - Initiatives: Groups multiple policy definitions together for broad governance frameworks.
This Answer Would Be Correct If
The scenario required preventing users from deploying virtual machines in unapproved geographic regions or enforcing mandatory metadata tags.
Azure Cloud Shell
Azure Cloud Shell
What Azure Cloud Shell Is
Azure Cloud Shell is an interactive, browser-accessible, authenticated terminal environment for managing Azure resources using command-line tools like Bash or PowerShell.
Why It Doesn't Meet the Requirement
- Command-Line Interface: Cloud Shell is designed for running scripts, command-line utilities, and automation, not for building visual, GUI-based metric dashboards or tile layouts.
- No Graphical Layout Customization: It cannot arrange graphical tiles, status widgets, or real-time metric charts on the portal landing screen.
Key Characteristics and Limitations
- Browser-Embedded Terminal: Provides authenticated CLI access directly within the portal.
- Pre-Configured Tools: Comes pre-installed with tools such as Azure CLI, Azure PowerShell,
kubectl, git, andterraform. - Temporary Compute: Runs in a temporary container backed by an Azure Files share for persistent storage.
This Answer Would Be Correct If
A scenario required executing cross-platform administration scripts or deploying infrastructure using CLI commands directly from a web browser without local tool installations.
