What this benchmarking architecture is

This architecture establishes a controlled, high-performance load generation environment for database and infrastructure benchmarking. By placing a sufficiently sized Compute Engine virtual machine in the exact same failure domain (zone), region, and Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) network as the database instance, the test isolates the database subsystem under test and eliminates confounding variables.

How it meets the benchmarking requirements

• Eliminating client-side bottlenecks: Multi-threaded OLTP benchmark drivers such as HammerDB and pgbench execute highly parallel workloads that consume substantial compute resources. Sizing the client VM with adequate vCPU and memory (e.g., an e2-standard-32 instance) ensures the client itself never saturates its CPU or network stack during load generation.
• Minimizing network jitter and latency: Locating the client in the same region and zone eliminates inter-zone or cross-region network latency and transit hops, allowing engineers to measure the true transactional capacity and input/output performance of the database.
• Securing private communication: Connecting directly over the internal RFC 1918 private IP address ensures that traffic does not traverse public gateways, Network Address Translation (NAT), or external routing paths.

• Accurate baseline establishment: Generates reproducible, clean performance metrics (e.g., Transactions Per Second / TPS, Transactions Per Minute / TPM) against defined SLO targets.

• Direct private transit: Leverages Google Cloud's low-latency internal SDN fabric for optimal throughput.
• Scalable concurrency: Allows simulating hundreds of concurrent client connections without dropping requests at the operating system or socket layer.

Why this is optimal

Compared to executing tests over WAN, VPN, or across regions, running a dedicated, high-vCPU client within the same zone and VPC gives the cleanest signal for establishing baseline database performance and verifying architectural SLOs.
